Bruno Fernandes Analysis – The Spark Manchester United needed

Bruno Miguel Borges Fernandes has become a household name since he joined the English club outfit Manchester United earlier this year. The Portuguese midfielder has produced 8 goals and 8 assists in 17 appearances for the club which is a testament of his impressive football abilities.

With the help of his stellar performances, Manchester United have gone on an impressive unbeaten run of 19 games at the time of writing. Is he the missing piece which Manchester United wanted all this time? Is he the person who can become a shining light? I surely think so.

Let’s take a closer look at the Portuguese in how he came into the limelight

The Premiera League

Bruno Fernandes came in the limelight when he started producing performances day in and day out for Sporting CP. He joined the Portuguese side from Udinese in September 2017.

During his tenure at Sporting, scoring and assisting goals was never a problem for the Portuguese maestro. Due to his outstanding performances, he was named Premiera League POTY for back to back seasons in 2017-18 and 2018-2019.

When we talk about player impact, Bruno Fernandes has epitomized that fact since the day he joined Manchester United. It was always his dream to play for a Premier League side and his wish came true when the transfer was agreed between Manchester United and Sporting CP.

“As soon as I started to play, my family knew my big dream was being in the Premier League and playing for Manchester United.”

The Portuguese starlet joined the Red Devils on January 30th, 2020 for a fee of £65.7 million, and as they say “the rest is history.”

Intelligence, flair, commitment, and desire are few of the superlatives that can be used to describe the virtual attributes of this Portuguese superstar.

Bruno Fernandes first goal

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solksjaer gave Bruno Fernandes his full debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League, which resulted in a 0-0 draw. His first involvement in goal came against the mighty Chelsea when he assisted fellow teammate and skipper Harry Maguire in a 2-0 victory over the Blues. He registered his first goal for the club against Watford by scoring a penalty in a 3-0 win over the Hornets, five days later.

Bruno Fernandes Stats

Since his debut, he has made 16 appearances for the club and has registered some amazing stats, which are highlighted below:

Talking about the technical and tactical part of the game, the Portuguese player is nothing sort of luxury.

As far as his technical ability is concerned, he has created a total of 37 chances, with a passing accuracy of 75%. With his vision and thinking, the attacking quartet of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood, and Odion Ighalo have benefited to a different degree. He has been able to make other players like Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay, Nemanja Matic improve immensely (special mention for Nemanja Matic).

This is due to him being comfortable in both central midfield positions alongside a more defensive player while also being able to receive the ball on the half turn ahead of play.

Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s formation of 4-2-3-1 and Bruno’s overall style of play is working wonders at the club.

Qualities

Keeping Bruno Fernandes’ tactical sense in perspective, he is someone who needs to be talked about more often than usual. By signing him, Manchester United not only have signed a top-class midfielder, but also a brilliant reader of the game. Some of the tactical points have been discussed below.

Player awareness

With outstanding reading, Bruno Fernandes has the ability to think one step ahead of the other teams. He has a constant habit of looking and influencing the next move with an attacking mindset.

Decision making

Bruno is quick thinker on the field and that is why his decision making is second to none. He has the ability to perform the right things at the right time.

Quality of leadership

With the departure of big names from Manchester United, the team lacked a leader. But with the arrival of the Portuguese talisman that fact is slowly sinking into oblivion.

Even Roy Kean only had good things to say about the attacking midfielder.

“He’s brought leadership, but I think he’s brought it in a different way. People talk about leadership in terms of tackles, but he’s just given everyone a lift, and that comes down to his quality.”

Versatility

With the ability to play in numerous roles, Bruno gives multiple options to his manager in terms of playing at different positions. He can play in a deeper role when needed as he did against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup.

Attacking prowess

With 8 goals and as many assists in 17 appearances, we surely know that Bruno Fernandes does not need a lot of opportunities to be involved in goal scoring opportunities.

Patrice Evra has mentioned Bruno’s positivity in the field of play which has caught his eye

“He wants the ball, he wants to play. That’s what I love about his personality. He’s not scared. He wants to create chances and wants to score goals. He is such a positive player.”

Conclusion

Manchester United understood that to rise back to the top of the football summit they will have to invest in the ‘modern attacking midfielder’ who is capable of playing multople roles in a single game.

Bruno Fernandes fulfills that requirement and so far, he has looked every bit the player Manchester United expected he’d be. The new era looks bright
